Why Grout Gets Dirty
Grout is porous, meaning it absorbs dirt, grease, and spills. Over time, this buildup makes grout lines look dark and dingy.
The Baking Soda Method
This is a safe and effective way to clean grout without harsh chemicals.
- Make a paste of baking soda and water.
- Apply the paste to the grout lines.
- Spray with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. It will bubble.
- Once the bubbling stops, scrub with a stiff brush (an old toothbrush works well).
- Rinse with water and wipe dry.
Hydrogen Peroxide for Tough Stains
For stubborn stains or mold, use hydrogen peroxide. Apply it directly to the grout, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub and rinse.
Sealing is Key
Once your grout is clean and dry, apply a grout sealer to protect it from future stains. This should be done once a year.
