Removing Baked-On Grease

Don't throw away that pan! Here's how to save it.

The Baking Soda Paste

For baking sheets and pans with burnt-on grease, baking soda is a miracle worker.

  1. Mix baking soda and water to form a thick paste.
  2. Spread it over the greasy areas.
  3. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes (or overnight for really bad stains).
  4. Scrub with a scouring pad or crumpled aluminum foil.
  5. Wash as usual.

Ammonia for Oven Racks

Place your greasy oven racks in a large trash bag. Add 1/2 cup of ammonia. Seal the bag tightly and leave it outside overnight. The fumes will loosen the grease. In the morning, wipe clean and rinse thoroughly.
